- Backing : Making of the shoulder or joint of a book into which the cover boards will fit. - Bradel : Binding process in which the sections are sewn together, the back reinforced by cloth hinges and the book made ready for insertion in the case, which has been built-up separately. - Calf : A high-grade leather, prepared in natural colour or dyed, from calf skin and in rough or smooth finish. - Covering : To put the cover on (leather, material, paper...). - Edge : Edge of the paper sheet block. - End paper : Paper for finishing the inside of book covers. - False bands : A binding decoration, dividing the back into sections. - Foredge : Edge of a book opposite to the back. - Groove : Valley or channel at either side or parallel to the backbone joints of a cased-in book. - Head band : A decorative piece of coton or leather overhanging the top of the spine of a book. - Head cap : The top of the book cover that lays over the headband. - Morocco : Vegetable-tanned, goat skin leather with a characteristic grain pattern developed naturally or merely by hand-boarding, or graining, the damp leather. - Parchment : Skin of goat, sheep or other animal prepared with lime, like vellum, for writing or printing on. - Paring : Thinning of the edges of leather for book covers. - Pulling : Pulling apart of the sections of a book before rebinding. - Sewing frame : Frame on which cords or tapes are attached and stretched taut, and to which the sections of a book are sewn by hand. - Shagreen : Fine granulated goat skin leather. - Edging : To cut the edges of the longuer sheets of paper for all to have the same sizes. - Side : Cover board. - Signature : Sheets of paper folded and binded together as a section of a book. - Spine : Binding edge. - Tail edge : Bottom edge. - Top edge : Head edge.
