Bookbinding
is born as the antic 'volumen'
in papyrus
paper
were discontinued for
the parchment codex
(pages folt in signatures, sewed on pizzles
and protected with 2 wooden boards).
Boards
at this time are sumptuously covered with goldsmith's
art items (metal, ivory, precious stones...).Later on,
bookbindings get lighter as paper
coming from China
is introduced into Europe.
Parchment,
pizzle,
wooden
boards
and goldsmith's
art
are discontinued for paper, string,
cardboard
and leather.
Book finds then its definitive shape.
Through
following centuries to nowadays, bookbindings will mostly
have decoration
and gilding
changings.
